It's the same route as our 2016 Up North Sportive - why fix it if it's awesome!

A cracking intermediate, mid level ride.

Rated 3/5 for difficulty, this is a stunning and challenging intermediate ride. The beautiful route sets off from Ilkley turning left onto what’s known in these parts as “The Back Road". The route follows the River Wharfe, taking you along stone walled country roads and through the stunning Bolton Abbey Estate. You will undulate towards the ruins of the 12th Century Bolton Abbey and the more recent Cavendish Memorial (you may recognise this from our photographs) and out towards historic Barden Tower, before descending and crossing via the ancient Barden Bridge onto the East bank of the river. There are some nips along the route (this is Yorkshire after all) but none of them last for long and the scenery is well worth it, plus there’s always a nice downhill to follow. The road rolls on and through the pretty village of Burnsall, home to Postman Pat from where you will head up to meet the 75 milers at the first drinks stop in the bustling village of Grassington. Staying with the 75 milers, the ride now takes on a different feel, snaking up the flat (Yorkshire flat) winding, valley bottom on single track, very low traffic roads, past Great Whernside and on through delightful Kettlewell. A second drinks stop will give you chance to refuel at Arncliffe, before splitting from the 75 milers and heading South, past the sheer limestone cliffs of Kilnsley Cragg and back to Burnsall for a legendary Fat Lad lunch stop at 60.5km. You’ll be ready for it and you’ll need it as post lunch you’re about to take on your longest and toughest climb of the day, out of Burnsall on the West side of the river. It’s pretty much all down hill after that as you pick up the road back through Bolton Abbey, meeting up with the 75 milers once again for the final 10km home.

FLAB 50 Mile Sportive - Described by many as 'the best Sportive they’ve ever done'!

A cracking intermediate or advanced beginner ride.

We return to Yorkshire, famous for it’s stunning countryside, spectacular cycling, odd language and home of FAT LAD AT THE BACK for the 1st Sportive in the FLAB 2017 calendar.

Check out our video of May 2016

If you're worried about being on your own, you can join one of our informal groups and get tips and encouragement all the way around from our highly experienced FLambassador cyclists.

The Yorkshire routes have been planned by Fat Lad in Charge Richard Bye, who grew up in Ilkley and has been cycling the surrounding roads for the past 20 years, so you’re in for something exceptional.

The routes have been chosen for their breathtaking views, historic locations, superbly enjoyable cycling and varying levels of challenge. As you’ve probably heard, you can’t cycle far around these parts without some climbing, however our emphasis is on enjoying the ride so these routes avoid some of the worst lung stinging climbs available and offer really interesting, varied, challenging and well balanced rides, that you only get with local knowledge.

Our objective is to ensure that you have an ace day out, meet some of the awesome lads and lasses in the FLAB community and leave wanting more. Not more to eat however - our lunch stops are legendary!

There are 3 options to choose from, so there is definitely one for you. The three rides overlap and include sections and drink stops which are shared so you have every chance of meeting up with riders who are on the other 2 routes.
